Mile 23

After finishing the Disney Marathon (my only marathon). 1.13.13

I ran my first marathon this January. It was going to be my only marathon.... I did it. It hurt. I never needed to do it again. But now, like many others, I want to run Boston.

I quit smoking July 1, 2007, signed up for the Tufts 10k for that coming October, and quickly replaced smoking with jogging. That summer I ran my first 5k in Maynard with my friends Erica and Whitney and knew instantly that I loved races.

It's all about the crowds and the motivation and the act of training for something. I don't sign up to win, or even get my own PR…I sign up because I think they are fun. I run these races with friends. I run them alone.

The day before the Boston Marathon my sister-in-law and I ran the BAA 5k as part of the Medley (5K/10K/1/2 Marathon)  and when I crossed over the official marathon finish line, for an instant I thought to myself… wow, that would be an amazing feeling, crossing this finish line after 26.2 miles.

Last week I brought my camera to Mile 23. I hung out with my friends, had burgers from the outdoor grill in front of The Fireplace Restaurant, I cheered on strangers and drank Ciders out of a Dunkin Donuts cup. The Boston Marathon is a holiday and one of my favorite Boston events. We heard about bombs right away from a friend who had crossed the finish line just minutes before. We were waiting for 2 more of our friends to pass us, so while the police were trying to clear the streets, we walked against the traffic of the runners until we met up with our friends. Happy became sad became strong and triumphant.

3.31.10 We were all waiting to cheer on our field hockey friend and teammate Steph who was running the Boston Marathon for the Bruins Foundation. She found out about the bombs and not being able to complete the marathon while on the course. After a round of hugs...she kept running as far as she was allowed to. 4.15.13
